Microdermabrasion units are new high tech skin care devices designed to treat many skin conditions more effectively and safely than previously possible.

Microdermabrasion is also referred to as a "Power Peel" and works by spraying a jet of fine inert micro-crystals across the skin in an abrasive action. These crystals also have disinfecting and drying properties and help to clean the skin of infected lesions such as acne. The dead skin cells are lifted from the surface by this abrasion and are then whisked away by vacuum suction and new skin growth is subsequently stimulated.

Microdermabrasion can produce a range of peels from light "Beauty Peels" to very deep treatments and allows the doctor to perform a controlled deeper treatment.

Because the doctor can see and control the depth of the peeling as he treats he can assess the depth of treatment necessary for the problem being treated and so produce efficient, rapid and safe results. It is an excellent alternative to the traditional surgical dermabrasion which is more aggressive, painful, and requires time off work for healing. In contrast, "power peeling" is relatively painless, requires no "down-time" for healing (you can leave the clinic and go back to work), its action is controlled, complications are rare, it is economical and it produces great results that are in between peeling and laser surgery. Some results are noticeable immediately and there is further progressive improvement over the 2 or 3 weeks following each treatment.

Apart from the surface abrasive action the treatment also causes intense stimulation of the full thickness of the skin bringing about many positive responses in the dermis such as improved blood supply and lymph drainage to improve the health and vitality of the skin with substantially increased collagen and elastin formation to firm and plump the skin. In the epidermis an increased rate of new cell reproduction eliminates the older damaged skin cells from the surface, resulting in a substantially healthier and glowing skin with better tone and support.

Conditions that can be effectively treated include:

Mild to moderate lines and wrinkles
  Lip lines
  Sun damage
  Age changes
  Facial, body and hand exfoliation
Enlarged pores / obstructed and blocked pores
  Rough, uneven textured skin
  Hyperpigmentation

Active acne including pustular acne

Acne scars, surgical or raised scars
  Reduction of broken capillaries

Usually a course of treatments is necessary to achieve the desired effects, the number required depending on the condition of the skin to begin with.

At our clinics the microdermabrasion unit we use is a professional medical unit that can give a deeper, safer, and more comprehensive treatment than the many salon units available. This unit has been in use in Europe for ten years, it is fully sterilisable, and, because of its safety has received clearance by both the FDA in the strict USA market and the TGA here in Australia. It is used by doctors and trained medical personel, and you can be assured of the safety and effectiveness of the treatments offered. Side effects are very rare.

A medical consultation is first carried out to detect any skin or medical conditions that may influence the safe use of the programme and to fully assess your skin condition and decide on the appropriate course of treatment for you to ensure the best possible results.
