Tattoo Removal - FOTONA Fractat Laser

Tattoo Removal
Modern laser technology allows tattoos to be removed more safely and effectively than in the past. Scarring is now uncommon, and treated areas generally show minimal visible evidence of the previous tattoo.
Not all ink colours respond equally to treatment, and some tattoos may not be fully removable. During an in-clinic assessment, your practitioner will review your tattoo and discuss realistic expectations, including whether your tattoo may be more challenging to treat.
A range of lasers is available for tattoo removal. At our clinic, we use the Fotona Starwalker FracTat protocol, which combines Q-switched and picosecond lasers with a fractional ablative laser. The fractional component may support improved results, potentially requiring fewer sessions and reducing downtime compared with conventional lasers.
Tattoo ink consists of pigment particles embedded in the skin. These particles are typically too large for the immune system to remove naturally, which is why tattoos are permanent. Fractional laser technology works to break the pigment into smaller particles, allowing the body’s lymphatic system to help clear them more effectively over time.

Treatment guide
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments required varies depending on factors such as:
- Skin type
- Age of the tattoo
- Location on the body
- Ink colour and type
- Tattoo layering
- Previous treatments
- Presence of scarring or tissue changes
Treatments are typically spaced 6–12 weeks apart to allow the skin to respond and for the body to process the pigment. Individual responses to treatment may vary, and multiple sessions are generally required.
Is Tattoo Removal Painful?
Most patients experience manageable discomfort during treatment. A topical anaesthetic can be applied beforehand to help reduce any sensation.
Downtime
Downtime is generally minimal. The treated area may require a protective dressing for a few days until the skin has healed. Most people can resume normal activities shortly after treatment.
