Surgical Lipoma Removal with Minimal Access Lipectomy

A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) fatty lump that grows under the skin. While lipomas are usually harmless, some people seek removal due to discomfort, interference with movement, or concerns about their appearance.
At GMC Cosmedical, the technique we us e is our own Minimal Access Lipectomy (MAL). This method is designed to remove lipomas through a smaller incision compared to traditional open excision. It is performed under local anaesthetic in a procedure room and does not require hospital admission.
What Is a Lipoma?
Lipomas are slow-growing, soft tissue lumps made up of fat cells. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the shoulders, arms, back, and thighs. While often painless, they can sometimes become uncomfortable, grow larger, or be noticeable in visible areas.
About Minimal Access Lipectomy
Traditional lipoma removal usually requires an incision larger than the lump itself. In contrast, Minimal Access Lipectomy uses a much smaller incision and specialised instruments to remove the lipoma. This method is safer, minimises scarring and results in faster and better healing as there is less tissue disruption.
The procedure generally involves:
Assessment – The lipoma’s size, location, and depth are evaluated. Imaging such as ultrasound may sometimes be recommended. In the consultation you will discuss the risks and possible complications of this procedure, realistic expectations and expected recovery. The consultation will take place prior to the procedure and a cooling off period is recommended to give you adequate time to consider your options.
Local anaesthetic – The procedure is typically performed with local anaesthetic.
Small incision – A small cut (often less than 1 cm) is made over the lipoma.
Loosening the capsule – The surrounding capsule is carefully released.
Extraction – The lipoma is removed, either as a whole or in smaller sections.
Closure – Fine sutures are used to close the incision.
Recovery and Aftercare
Mild bruising, swelling, or discomfort may occur after the procedure. Most people can return to usual daily activities within a short period, but recovery varies. You will receive instructions on wound care and follow-up appointments are arranged to monitor healing.
Important Considerations
Not all lipomas are suitable for minimal access removal. Large, deep, or vascular lipomas may require a different approach.
As with all procedures, risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, recurrence of the lipoma, or the need for further treatment.
Outcomes vary depending on the size, depth, and nature of the lipoma, as well as individual healing factors.
Is This Procedure Right for You?
A consultation is required to determine whether Minimal Access Lipectomy is appropriate for your situation. During your appointment, the potential benefits, limitations, and risks will be discussed in detail.
