Incisionless Suture Otoplasty

Some people feel dissatisfied with the appearance of their ears. A traditional approach has been open otoplasty surgery, which involves incisions, removal of cartilage or skin, sutures, and dressings.
An alternative technique available at GMC Cosmedical is Incisionless Suture Otoplasty, which uses fine needles and sutures to reshape the ear cartilage without skin incisions. This method does not usually require dressings and can often be performed under local anaesthetic in a procedure room. Sedation can be used where indicated.
What is Incisionless Suture Otoplasty?
This technique involves using permanent sutures beneath the skin to change the shape of the ear cartilage. The sutures are placed to create or enhance the fold of the ear (the antihelical fold), which can position the ears closer to the side of the head.
Who might consider this procedure?
This procedure may be suitable for people who:
- Have ears that appear more prominent than usual
- Have a less defined antihelical fold
- Are looking for an alternative to open otoplasty
- Prefer to avoid hospitalisation
- Have matured ear cartilage
What does the procedure involve?
Consultation – An assessment of the ear shape, cartilage, and treatment goals. In the consultation you will discuss the risks and possible complications of this procedure, realistic expectations and expected recovery. The consultation will take place prior to the procedure and a cooling off period is recommended to give you adequate time to consider your options.
Local anaesthetic – The procedure is generally performed with local anaesthetic; sedation can be incorporated if required.
Marking and planning – The planned new position and fold are marked.
Suture placement – Permanent sutures are threaded beneath the skin with a fine needle to reshape the cartilage.
No external incisions – As no skin is cut, there are usually no external scars or stitches.
Recovery and aftercare
After the procedure, temporary swelling, bruising, or soreness may occur. Most people return to daily activities within a short period, though activities that place pressure on the ears should be avoided for several weeks. Follow-up appointments are arranged to monitor healing.
Important considerations
As with any medical procedure, there are risks, including infection, bleeding, asymmetry, suture-related issues, or the possibility of further procedures.
Outcomes vary between individuals depending on their ear anatomy, healing, and other factors.
