Suture Otoplasty for Ears

Benefits
This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation if indicated in our clinic procedure room, and you can return home immediately after the procedure.
You will see your results immediately.
The absence of skin incisions and scarring.
The avoidance of hospitalisation and general anaesthetic.
Reduced risk of infection and other complications.
Considerations
Who is a good candidate?
Any person who has protruding ears that they wish to improve can have this procedure. All age groups can be considered for treatment after full assessment and comprehensive discussion of the risks and possible complications.
Your consultation will be with a registered medical professional who will:
- Discuss your concerns and goals
- Take a full medical history
- Assess your ear structure
- Explain the procedure, risks, benefits, and expected and realistic outcomes
- Provide information on costs, recovery time, and follow-up care
You will have the opportunity to ask questions, and a cooling-off period will apply before booking surgery, in line with AHPRA guidelines.
Potential complications include infection, haematoma, asymmetry, and suture extrusion (sutures poking through the skin), changes in skin sensation, and recurrence of the protruding ear.
Does the procedure hurt?
You can apply an anaesthetic cream to your ears to numb them before local anaesthetic injections are used to the front and back of the ears. These injections will completely anaesthetise the ears and there will be no discomfort during the procedure itself.
How long will the result last?
Generally the results last indefinitely. In a small percentage of cases, one of the stitches may fail but a similar process can be repeated to replace the failed stitch. The vast majority report very high satisfaction with this procedure.
